A SINGLE CHANGE CAN START EVERTHING AND IT WAS A SPONTANEOUS BUZZ CUT FOR AN ALEXANDER MCQUEEN CAMPAIGN THAT LAUNCHED RUTH BELL ALONG WITH HER PEROXIDE PUNK INTO THE SPOTLIGHT.

Any girl will agree that hair can lend a certain kind of protective shield. Ruth Bell used this norm to her advantage and spun the wheel in the opposite direction to go contra the long blonde princess locks that mirrored her twin sister May. The bleach blonde crop tuned with her fine widespread features have augmented her look into somewhat of a Spring/Summer 2016 runway enigma. She embraced the bold move with freedom by stepping out from her locks and comfortably into a self-admitted fresh sense of confidence, her genuine tomboy style flies with her sly wits and Kentish sass.

BEFORE THE BUZZ 

Ruth grew up in Kent, England and calls Dover her childhood stomping ground. Ruth was in Paris with her twin May when the sisters got approached by a scout on the street. With a punky attitude ingrained in her genes, Ruth grabbed her sister and ran away. It wasn’t until a year later when they looked him up again and thought, why not give it a shot. Soon enough Ruth and May were signed to Elite models and had brands pouncing on their double desirability factor. They were cast side by side for many gigs including a fashion film for Swarovski shot by Ellen Von Unwerth. In true pop style, Ruth appeared in full glam swirling in candy coloured crystals with her twin and partner in crime when a postman turns up and gets pulled in for a party. Much of Ruth's early work alongside her sister was driven by commercial brands until a casting for an Alexander McQueen campaign which was the takeoff point for the solo work that sent her career ablaze. 

NON-STOP SINCE MCQUEEN

An English rose was the vantage point for Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2015 campaign and Ruth was cast for photographer David Sims’ somber set of beautiful decay. Hair stylist Paul Hanlon buzzed Ruth’s hair just thirty minutes before the shoot and the dramatic transition cast the femininity and independence intended by McQueen’s Creative Director, Sarah Burton. The campaign’s lavishly ornate set had Ruth wearing a hand-massaged-rose-petal-print organza and rose lace ruffle dress and teint lace and satin bra, lavish extravagance which had Ruth exuding her own femininity and independence on set. Ruth’s buzz cut caught on among other models who took their hands to the clippers this past fashion month. A string of Fashion Week gigs came calling and Ruth walked a fierce run of shows for Spring/Summer2016 starting with Milan. Gucci, Max Mara, Pucci, Versus Versace, Versace, Kenzo, Isabel Marant and Saint Laurent were her warm up. Ruth’s schedule has been non-stop since and this is just the beginning, her phone likely won’t be quieting down anytime soon.

THE SAINT LAURENT FACE 

Certain labels hold distinctive clout and being cast as the face of a Saint Laurent campaign counts as one sleek studded leather star in Hedi Slimane’s constellation. Chosen as the face of the Saint Laurent Resort 2016 collection, Ruth was shot by Slimane in Los Angeles and she strongly expressed the phenomenal experience of being plucked as a Saint Laurent castaway. There is no compromising the ownership of her Saint Laurent defiant soul and accessories aside, Ruth carries the attitude that tunes to Hedi Slimane’s extra sense. Following the resort campaign images, Ruth was shot again by Slimane for an editorial spread titled “Couture Now”, which has her in lush couture pieces by Gaultier, Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, not to mention Yves Saint Laurent couture by Hedi Slimane. Her trademark buzz and punky scowl may have put her on the map, but like the essence of Slimane’s image with Ruth wearing an ethereal piece from Raf Simons’ last Dior Couture collection, authenticity sticks around.

Ruth and her twin May share an Instagram account and the sisters have been somewhat inseparable since the start of their career.  Ruth’s new buzz cut has prompted her solo foray into modeling, along with a solo Instagram account.

This has been a big year for Ruth Bell, beginning with her Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2015 campaign that launched her buzz cut and solo modeling career. She has been all over fashion month and has just appeared in a black and white campaign shot by Hedi Slimane for the Saint Laurent Resort 2016 collection.
