Fashion People

The editorial world has its publishing leaders and Sarah Harris’ eye was trained there. After studying Fashion Journalism at London’s College of Fashion, she launched into working at Women’s Wear Daily, then W Magazine, after which she landed at British Vogue. Starting out as Fashion Features Editor and now as Fashion Features Director; she has evolved in a role which has carved out her 12 year Vogue home. Beyond her articles and editorial spreads, Harris’ own Notting Hill home has been featured for her custom designed wrapped leather wardrobe. Meticulously categorized by fabrics and colors, this sacred space is hardly a surprise considering her feature focused role. Rarely seen without worn denim, her natural silvery mane has been the talk of countless beauty blogs and natural is the key that follows her second nature mode of working. Whether reviewing an Alexander McQueen show, editing a high street fashion supplement or hitting the road to write a Vogue travel feature, her choices join forces with the magazine’s direction.

Shopping platforms are the source for what to buy and where to find it and they forge a special place that makes retailer partnerships Sarah Harris’ partners in crime. Her role is one of double impact, she directs Vogue readers to their buying choices and readers follow her personal picks. She recently purchased Miansai cuff bracelets from her new favourite London shop, Modern Society, and posted to her Instagram account. The shop returned the featured love by sending Harris a candle for her birthday. With a virtual spirited exchange like that comes the source of the coveted items that makes it to the Vogue glossies. In line with the customer and forthcoming trends, Harris’ item features aren’t bound to the runway. Commercial partnerships like H&M are as important to Harris’ hunt for items to boost brand sales as the designer editorial stronghold. Her witty and pragmatic writing style combines a storyline approach that traces the trials and tribulations of shopping to resonate storylines like: “The hunt for the perfect T-shirt”, in L.A. Slicing through the clutter to deliver her Vogue audience with an eye forward, Harris’ personal wardrobe stocks designers favourites Haider Ackermann, Saint Laurent and Céline. Paige denim is one of her favourite brands and her style keeps a signature laid back minimalism with monochrome and cashmere in check.

Her point of view is blogged and written about beyond the catwalk. Travel features and luxury destinations soar and Harris’ definite taste polishes the itineraries that she writes for Vogue’s travel feature. Her four day Florence excursion primes up on insights like where to find wardrobe scents and rose water, inclusive of treasure spotting at Piazza Ciompi flea market. On a personal trip to the Caribbean island of Mustique, Harris’ two week stay at Villa Carissa came with an Insta-ready array of fragrant snaps like her Tara Matthews mismatched neon bikini and fresh coconut water in hand, picked from the palm. Her choice Rick Owens t-shirt dresses, beauty essentials and luggage brand selects don’t miss a beat to be picked up. Her taste and directorial eye tick a level of high endorsement.

Global Editors unite at the 250 plus shows that cross New York, London, Milan and Paris every fashion month. Sarah Harris wrote an article for the Business of Fashion a couple of years ago that challenged the fate of the conventional catwalk. Will it last? The creeping trend of show streaming that began some years ago has now become the norm. The instant imprints cross every digital platform within seconds of any given catwalk apparition. Every industry person questioned by Harris would agree – sure, you can watch the show from home but live elements always reign in terms of showmanship. With paid show experiences rolling in, Harris transmits her written point of view that every item out there comes from a personal experience and has a story to tell. That’s the one she’ll feature to her readers.

Short Facts

Her silvery mane is a natural phenomenon of her distinctive look that is sought out by endless beauty blogs. She’s rarely spotted not wearing denim. Paige denim is one of her favourite brands and she wears them ripped and worn with a rotating collection of jackets from Saint Laurent to Valentino.

Travel is an important part of her writing and she’ll scout for feature items that recount her personal shopping experience from all corners of the globe. When she’s not editing an upcoming spread, she may be testing out a Ferrari in Florence for a Vogue travel feature.

Her padded blue leather walk in closet is a sanctuary that adheres to strict rules before entering or hanging any garments. A no metal hanger rule is one of many.
