INDISPENSABLE GIO

SOME PEOPLE HAVE THAT CERTAIN SOMETHING. THE UNMISTAKABLE SENSE OF STYLE, THE DEAD-AIM FEELING FOR TRENDS WHICH MAKES IT NEARLY INEVITABLE THAT THEY GROW UP TO BE AN ICON IN THE WORLD OF FASHION. FORMER MODEL AND STREET STYLE BLOGGER GIOVANNA BATTAGLIA IS DEFINITELY SUCH A PERSON.

Vogue Italy, Vogue Japan, W magazine, Dolce & Gabbana, Max Mara – this illustrious list is just a short extract of the magazines and brands Miss Battaglia either has been or is still working for. As a fashion expert with the courage to do things in a different way, she has become almost indispensable in today’s fashion industry.

FROM MILAN TO MANHATTAN

Maybe it was fortunate circumstances that Giovanna Battaglia was born in Italy’s fashion and cultural metropolis Milan in 1979. Here she had the opportunity to grow up in a city of style, develop an eye for the perfect look and an unerring taste for fashion. “As a teenager, while my friends all had Take That posters in their rooms, I had those of Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. Not yet 14 years old and I was already smitten.” Battaglia explained.

So it was just the logical consequence that at the age of sixteen she became a model. Her beautiful Italian looks, a slender figure and almond brown eyes soon caught the attraction of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who made her their muse and in-house model. The liaison between Dolce & Gabbana and Giovanna lasted for over eight years and predestined her to be a well-known face - also outside the Italian world of fashion.

She met all the famous designers, editors, stylists and fashion icons from around the world and evolved from a fashion-infected teenager to a true fashionista. As a model only being attractive and keeping the mouth shut wasn´t really her thing. “I was a bad model. I would give my opinion to everything.” So changing from the catwalk to first row after her modelling career was more than just an option.

BECOMING A STYLIST

At the age of 26 she endeavoured to become a stylist, starting to work for l´Uomo Vogue. Later on she also started to work for Vogue Italy, Vogue Germany, Vogue Japan, Vogue America and many more. In 2009 she was named Fashion Director for Vogue Gioiello and Vogue Pelle. In 2011 Giovanna moved from Italy to New York, starting to freelance as a stylist and editor mostly, but not only, for the famous W Magazine.

Her personal style made her a role model and fashion icon for fashion victims all over the globe. She is featured in countless blogs and is a darling to every street-style photographer out there. Evolving from a successful model to a well-known fashion editor and a prestigious stylist, she definitely earned her reputation as a true style icon.

Short Facts

Trademark

Her style is classic Italian chic with a special Battaglia twist, something she refers to as „flattering“. She prefers well-tailored shapes with a unique element that allow Giovanna to stand out from the crowd.

Distinctiveness

Battaglia loves shoes. She owns hundreds of them. One of her favourites is a pair of golden Louboutins. She adores them so much that she doesn´t even dare to wear them.

Anecdote

Giovanna Battaglia is always „en vogue“. Besides her several jobs for the magazine she was even in love with her now ex-boyfriend Vladimir Restroin-Roitfeld, the son of the former French Vogue editor-in-chief, Carine Roitfeld.

TIMELINE

1979 – Baby got style

Giovanna is born in Milan, Italy, in September 1979. Her father is Sicilian and her mother Calabrian. Both of them are painters. She has an older brother named Antonio and a younger sister and brother – Sara and Luigi – who as children had to be her „models“ for ad-lib „fashion shows“ in her child´s room. She begs her parents to buy her a fur coat when she is only eight years old.

1991 – Predestination

At the age of twelve, Giovanna buys her first edition of the Italian Vogue.

1996 – Model

Giovanna starts modelling at the age of sixteen. She soon gets spotted by the Dolce & Gabbana Team and ends up being their in-house model for over eight years. Although she loves the people at D&G – she calls them „family“ – she never really loved modelling. She desired to be responsible for the styling.

2002 – Thailand

After years of modelling, loads of high fashion parties and after spending a neat sum of money on fashion and jewellery, Giovanna travels unescorted to Asia for a month. Here she decides to stop modelling soon.

2004 – En Vogue

At the age of 26 Giovanna finally manages the transition from a model to a well-demanded stylist. She starts as a fashion editor at L´Uomo Vogue under then editor-in-chief, Anna Dello Russo. Over the course of the next years she works for many other Vogue publications.

2009 – Fashion Director

Battaglia is appointed fashion director of Vogue Gioiello and Vogue Pelle under Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani.

2011 – Moving to New York

Giovanna decides to move to New York City. That´s where her (now ex-) boyfriend Vlad lives and where she gets the attractive offer to work as a freelance stylist and contributing editor for the well-known W Magazine.

2012 – Gio´s Journal

Giovanna loves New York – and New York loves Giovanna. She starts writing a monthly fashion-column for the W Magazine. It is called GIO´S JOURNAL.
