Fashion People

Elevated by Vogue to the status of best-dressed woman of 2009, Alexa Chung has spent almost a decade under the mantel of being one of the ultimate style icons of our time. Combining stunning looks with a keen mind and undeniable skills as public personality, at the mere age of 32 Alexa has fluidly morphed from model to TV presenter, from IT girl to author and entrepreneur to soon-to-be creative director.

Born on November 5th 1983 as the youngest of four children to a Chinese-English father and English mother, Alexa grew up in Hampshire, UK. With her father’s work as graphic designer and her mother’s love of art, aesthetics and the visual nature of things played an important part in her upbringing, with books on cubism, art and architecture lining her childhood bookshelf. Upon completing her A-levels at the age of 16 and obtaining a place to study literature at London’s Kings College, Alexa decided to forfeit academia for the time being, preferring to take up an offer to join Storm modelling agency, which had scouted her that same summer.

Fairing well, but not truly achieving knock out success as a model, Alexa decided to quit the business after four years in order to follow her continued desire to study. As fate would have it however, her path would follow a different trajectory. As she quit modelling, Alexa pursued an opportunity to join Channel 4 as a TV presenter. Despite having been in front of the camera before, her work for television truly cast the spotlight on her, giving Alexa the opportunity to prove that she did not just have a pretty face but was above all a young woman with a captivating personality and a good dose of wit, well worth watching and listening to. Appearing in numerous shows for Channel 4 as well as co-hosting various T4 film and music specials, Alexa’s unique style and outspoken nature began placing her into the spotlight regularly. Quickly becoming a favourite across the UK, no small part thanks to her zealous Tumblr account and a blog, MTV America soon took notice. Intrigued by her unique style, MTV asked her to host her own music and interview show from their New York studios, promoting her to relocate across the Atlantic in 2009.

By the time Alexa reached New York City, her significance as a global trendsetter and IT-girl was well on its way to being fully formed. Mulberry’s 2009 release of the “Alexa” bag, one of its all-time bestsellers, was the final marker of her ever-increasing cult status. Further amplified by the fact that Vogue named her ‘best dressed woman’ in the same year, it had taken only three short years for Alexa to become a household name in the world of fashion. Featuring on the cover of British Vogue for the first time in 2010, her appeal and personal style catapulted her back into a hugely successful career as a celebrity model, appearing as the face for Lacoste, Superga and Maje amongst many others.

Yet Alexa has never rested easy with just being a pleasing eye-catcher. She wants above all to be recognised for her individuality and creative output. Channelling this into a number of writing gigs, including freelancing for the Independent newspaper and working as a contributing editor for the British Vogue, Alexa released a book of photographs and scrap-book style notes, titled ‘IT’ in 2013. Using the book as a visual tool to humour her IT girl status, the book has since become one of Amazon’s top-ten bestsellers. Proving that Alexa Chung isn’t one to sit still, in the fall of this year she has added an excursion into the world of phone application to her colourful repertoire of skills. Launching an iPhone app that is a mix of Instagram and Pinterest, ‘Villoid’ is Alexa’s version of a a fashion platform which celebrates the process of getting dressed and sharing this with your friends.

At 32 years old, the young British style icon is not about to rest. Always on the move, looking for her next adventure, Alexa Chung found herself caught up in the fashion design industry with a recent announcement on her upcoming line Alexachung. Reaching for a contemporary-priced line offering denim, daywear, eveningwear, shoes and jewellery, Alexachung’s first clothing line will hit stores in May 2017, with herself as creative director.

Whatever you might expect from Alexa, one thing is certain, having successfully donned a multitude of hats over the years, be it as icon, muse, model or presenter, Alexa Chung has created quite a stir, proving that she is well worth keeping an eye on.

Short Facts

Her amazing sense of dressing and her outspoken witty character have made Alexa a magnetic force in fashion.

Alexa’s mixed heritage, blue eyes and dark hair lend an air of mystery to her beauty. She is however particularly captivating, as her approach to fashion is very organic, playful and effortless resulting in what seems to be an unpretentious approach to style.

Alexa has always been keen on gaining respect from women rather than men. In this way she is not comfortable in sexy or body conscious outfits, preferring to have fun with her wardrobe and express her fantasies and inspirations as opposed to aiming at amplifying her attractiveness.
