the Bombardier

ONE OF THE HOTTEST MUST HAVE THIS SEASON IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BOMBER JACKET. AND WHILE THIS TYPE OF JACKET HAS BEEN THE CALLING CARD OF A SELECT YOUNG CROWD FOR QUITE A WHILE, THIS SEASON DESIGNERS ARE INCORPORATING A MULTITUDE OF REINTERPRETATIONS OF THIS TRADITIONAL MEN’S STYLE INTO THEIR COLLECTIONS. WHETHER COMBINED WITH CASUAL STREET LOOKS OR MORE DRESSY EVENING ENSEMBLES, THE BOMBER JACKET IS SURE TO ADD A DEFINING EDGE TO YOUR OUTFIT.

Originally created for wartime pilots, the classic version of the flight jacket, Aviator or Bombardier is functional and durable. This season, designers have taken this masculine military style and infused it with the delicacy and nuanced subtlety of femininity and in doing so created something totally hot. Saint Laurent takes the classic aviator jacket and, by skimming off a few centimetres at the bottom, creates a fabulously sexy cropped version that looks just as good with a leather mini skirt as with any daytime outfit. Acne on the other hand goes the other way. Extending the jacket downwards it presents us with a medium length, oversized satin jacket-come-coat. Wear it with a sophisticated look or with your dark denim and be sure to feel the temperature drop in your immediate vicinity due to the self-confident cool factor of this style.

The season’s most distinct character comes to fore in Dries Van Noten’s beautiful take on the bomber jacket however. Using embroidered jacquard and soft eastern motifs, he presents a style that perfectly combines the masculine and feminine nuances of this look, creating a versatile garment that can as easily be worn with a delicate dress as with a pair of chinos. Tommy Hilfiger brings the elegant into play by working with fabrics and surface texture to create some stunning pieces as well. Combining silk and cotton for instance, he mirrors the wide spectrum of wearability contained within this must have addition to the female wardrobe this fall. So whether you choose to go for a silky elegant style or to stick to the touch of the classic cool Bombardier, this jacket will certainly give your outfit a nuance of laissez-faire that seems laid back and yet very stylish at the same time.
