ALL DISTRICTS OF DESIGN HAIL A VITALITY THAT CONNECTS RISK WITH CREATIVITY. SOUGHT THROUGH MINIMALISM, NO MOVEMENT CELEBRATES THE REFINEMENT OF THIS DISCIPLINE AS POTENTLY AS BAUHAUS. JUST AS ARCHITECTURALLY CALCULATED FRAMES ELEVATE AN OPENNESS THAT BREATHES SPACE INTO STRUCTURE; THIS SEASON’S UNCLUTTERED LOOKS HOLD A SINGULAR OPINION BROUGHT ON BY A MOVEMENT THAT EVOKES CLARITY THROUGH LESS. INFLUENCED BY THE BAUHAUS VANGUARDS, LE CORBUSIER WAS ONE WHO SCULPTED FLAT ROOFS, SMOOTH FACADES AND CUBIC SHAPES, ARCHITECTURAL MASTERY WHICH PARLAYS FUNCTIONALITY WITH THE AIR OF THE SEASON.
Just like Le Corbusier’s “five point” design principles, minimalistic vitality is balanced between firmness and flexibility. Hermès taps a similar form with the Mailbox Bag’s four corner reinforcement, the edges neatly folded with a certain rationalism that extends the notion that function follows logic. Muted tones wash over The Row with an exploration of colour and weight. Classical tailoring retracts its peripheries with looks that subdue the collarless linen coat and paper thin knits. Lines are cut straight and hung perpendicular as emphasized by the purity of unrestricted space. Minimalism need not be restricted to straight and boxy confines; think the spiral staircase of Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye or the hyperbolic peaks of the Philips Pavilion, a structure which was designed to precipitate a sense of space through sound. Céline’s Pre-Fall shapes follow a spatial ideal, through the movement of exaggerated forms whereby the textiles are bonded instead of stitched. Here minimalism shines through the ever so slight adjustments that align a singular design element to a streamlined silhouette, take Céline’s white knit dress with a single seam down centre front. Minimalistic leniency parlays its architectural counterpart, structurally planned with a slanted facade to cast a shadow onto cloth and mimics the angle of a single light source beaming through the seam. It is a symmetry through which a take on minimalist design strikes the senses of the modern spirit.
