CHEERFUL CLERGY, PIZZA AND PASTA, ITALIAN IMAGERY AND AN EXUBERANT SIDEWALK SOCIAL SCENE MAKE UP THE SURREALIST SET OF DOLCE & GABBANA’S SPRING/SUMMER 2016 CAMPAIGN.
Set in Capri and shot by Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, the campaign promotes the collection theme of “Italia is Love” which is also displayed as the hand painted signage on one of the featured market stalls that offers delicious helpings of D&G handbags instead of Mediterranean fruit. Rather than sticking to a simple two-dimensional shoot however the duo have created an entire D&G world, in which family life, happiness and ease of mind are key themes.
With models eating and taking an abundance of selfies, the photos take a humorous jibe at the self-staging mind-set that accompanies many contemporary experiences. In this way also highlighting the theatrical nature of their D&G dream, the message seems to be two-fold. Whilst on one hand accentuating the beauty of social interactions and values that are side-lined but captured via the selfie, it also seems to emphasise that anybody can partake in and share their joyful experiences. Like an invitation to an endless holiday and a world of happiness and beauty, the photos are captivating and inviting, evoking exactly those phantasies about Italy that Dolce & Gabbana have so spectacularly worked into their recent collections.
