The Arts and Prada

ONE WOULD NOT BE MISTAKEN FOR THINKING THAT THE TITLE OF THIS ARTICLE WAS IN THE WRONG ORDER. WITH THE OPENING OF FONDAZIONE PRADA’S LATEST AND ARGUABLY MOST AMBITIOUS PROJECT, A 19 000 SQUARE METER SPACE IN THE SOUTH OF MILAN WITH WORKS CURATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE FOUNDATION, IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE LATTER IS INSPIRING THE FORMER.

Designed in conjunction with the Office for Metropolitan Architecture - headed by longtime collaborator Rem Koolhaas - the experimental space is partly built inside one of Milan’s first factories and will serve as a permanent exhibition space for displaying the results of more than 15 years of the foundations activities in the form of large-scale installations.

The complex will house and curate events dedicated to cinema, philosophy, fashion, architecture and performance. It will function as a platform for names such as Wes Anderson, Damien Hirst, Carsten Höller and Jeff Koons, names that need no further introduction - some of which were neither famous nor international when Prada commissioned them - as well as a collection of esteemed artists purchased under direction of Germano Celant such as Walter de Maria, Louise Bourgeois and Anish Kapoor.

With an already impressive exhibition space and headquarters in an 18th century Palazzo on Venice’s Grand Canal called Ca’ Corner, this will be the second of modern art museums to add to Prada’s prolific dedication to the arts. What was established as a philosophy to promote “the most radical of intellectual challenges in art and contemporary culture” has now become somewhat of an inward reflection. As artists continue to push their ideas further, Prada will be standing right there with them, possibly in front and maybe even looking behind. Open to the public from the 8th of May.
