DIOR CHANGEOVER

THE NEWS OF RAF SIMONS’ DEPARTURE FROM DIOR HAS HIT THE VIRTUAL WAVES. HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE BRAND WAS METEORIC AND HE WILL BE LEAVING THE HOUSE WITH THE SAME POISE WITH WHICH HE ENTERED.

After three and half years of nurturing the brand through six shows a year, two of which were haute couture collections, Simons is parting ways with Dior with the intent to focus on the work for his own brand and the passions that drive his personal life. This year’s film release, “Dior and I” gave a scrupulous look into the inner workings of Simons’ process. Artistry and craft have followed the 47 year old Belgian designer on his path from Jil Sander to his appointment as Dior’s Creative Director in 2012. Having made a significant contribution to Dior’s revenue growth, Simons has also influentially impacted the brand’s design aesthetic by bringing a bold sense of modernism to the collections. Known for his minimalism Simons has pushed the envelope for the brand in pairing couture with contemporary art as with his Sterling Ruby collaboration. Acknowledgement of Simon’s impressive contribution to the house has been cited by Bernard Arnault, Chairman and Chief Executive of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior SA and Sydney Toledano, Chief Executive of Christian Dior Couture, both of whom have thanked Simons in public statements for his accomplishments at Dior. Raf Simons has also expressed eloquent gratitude to all of the house’s members and news reports have stated that the riff came from the failure to agree on an employment contract; however his relationship with Dior remains amicable. Now of course the question rises - who will fill Simons’ shoes? His predecessor has yet to be found. Raf Simons last ready-to-wear show for Dior was set among a floral epiphany in Paris on October 2, 2015 and it goes without say that the designer’s lust for showmanship and beauty will not be gone unnoticed.
