TAKING OVER BALENCIAGA

WE HAVE ALL HEARD ABOUT ALEXANDER WANG’S FINAL SHOW FOR BALENCIAGA WITH HIS SUMPTUOUS WHITE ON WHITE COLLECTION FOR SS16. BUT WHO HAS BEEN SELECTED TO BECOME THE NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE HOUSE?

At 34 years old, the German designer, originating from Georgia, is ready to take over Balenciaga, starting today. Graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, Demna Gvasalia launched his very first collection in 2007 at Tokyo Fashion Week. A couple of years later, from 2009 to 2013, he became responsible for women’s Ready-to-Wear collections at Maison Martin Margiela. Gvasalia was then offered a bigger position as senior designer of women’s Ready-to-Wear collections for Louis Vuitton, before launching, along with his brother Guram, the brand Vetements, with its first collection presented at Paris Fashion Week in 2014.

Isabelle Guichot, president and CEO of Balenciaga is very pleased to welcome Demna Gvasalia as the new artistic director. She adds: “He has quickly emerged as the best choice for the new artistic direction of the maison. With his mastery of techniques, his expertise and fashion knowledge, in conjunction with his innovative and carefully considered approach, Demna Gvasalia adopts a unique vision of the designer’s role today and thus recalls Cristobal Balenciaga’s own vision.” She has no doubt that Demna Gvasalia will perfectly succeed/achieved in respecting Balenciaga core values and enhances them. While François-Henri Pinault, president and CEO of Kering, owner of Balenciaga, believes that “Demna Gvasalia embodies a unique approach to the profession, marked by a sociological observation of the wardrobe’s essentials and the way he remains humble and rigorous in his creative work.”

Demna Gvasalia is expecting to stage his first show for Balenciaga in March 2016 during Paris Fashion Week. We can’t wait!
