ALBER ELBAZ STEPS DOWN

JUST ONE WEEK FOLLOWING RAF SIMONS’ RESIGNATION FROM DIOR, ALBER ELBAZ HAS BEEN LET GO FROM LANVIN AFTER 14 YEARS OF NURTURING AND STRENGTHENING THE FRENCH BRAND’S COUTURE IMAGE FROM ITS ONCE WILTING POSITION.

Yesterday’s announcement came as a shock to the industry, especially given the report that the termination on the part of Lanvin’s majority shareholders was not on amicable terms. There were speculations that tensions between the designer and Lanvin’s owner Shaw-Lan Wang and chief executive Michèle Huiban and had been growing in recent years regarding a difference in beliefs over company principles. Circulating words within the industry over the designer’s departure has been met in tears from his design team and close circle of collaborators. His dire dedication to building the luxury brand from the ground up since 2001 has been an unequivocal labour of love and though the loss of such a magnetically creative mind ripples tragic disbelief, it provokes the dire question: what spurred the corrugated flip? Lanvin’s owners released a statement, “the implementation of its corporate strategic plan to continue making the oldest of the Parisian fashion houses the ambassador of French luxury’s excellence, in the independent spirit of its founder, Jeanne Lanvin.” Irony rises with this statement given that Elbaz’s last Lanvin Spring/Summer 2016 collection summoned an anti-consumerist manifesto amidst the graphic prints. With news like this, the sober reality of the fashion industry’s hawk-sharp business forces ruptures the idealism of beauty and dedication that makes this industry thrive. At this point it is impossible to imagine Lanvin sans Alber Elbaz, but let's not forget ingenious talent is never lost and we can already anticipate the celebrated designer’s next momentous venture.
